Lieutenant Colonel Marshall A. Hand

Lieutenant Colonel Hand was raised in Mahopac, NY. He graduated from Officer Candidate School in August 2005 and upon his graduation from the State University of New York (SUNY) Albany in June 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. In November 2006 he graduated from The Basic School and was assigned as a Tank Officer. Upon graduating from the Armor Officers Basic Course in October 2007, he was assigned to 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division.

 

In November 2007, Second Lieutenant Hand reported to 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division in Twentynine Palms, California where he assumed duties as the Company B, 3rd Platoon Commander. In May 2008, he was promoted to First Lieutenant and in fall 2008 he deployed to Sinjar Province, Iraq in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. Returning in June 2009, he assumed the duties as Company B Executive Officer. In April 2010, he served as the Battalion Assistant Operations Officer and Non-Lethal Weapons Officer in Charge (OIC) for the first ever Black Sea Rotational Force (BSRF-10). In June 2010 while deployed and in Bulgaria he was promoted to the rank of Captain.

 

Upon returning in August 2010, he was reassigned to Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in St. Mary’s, GA, where he was assigned as the Company A, 2nd Platoon Commander, Marine Corps Security Force Battalion. During his time at Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, he also served as the Company A Executive Officer and Company Commander until he was reassigned to 2nd Tank Battalion, 2d Marine Division in July 2013.

 

In July 2013 he reported to Camp Lejeune, NC as the Battalion Assistant Operations Officer for 2nd Tank Battalion, where he served until June 2014 when he deployed as part of Marine Corps Training Mission-United Arab Emirates (UAE) and served as the OIC for the 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade, Khalifa bin Zayed Presidential Guard, UAE until August 2015.

 

Once returning from the UAE, Captain Hand left active duty and transitioned to the Marine Corps Reserve. In December 2016 he received a master’s in leadership from Marshall University. Then in January 2017 he was promoted to Major and in May 2017 joined Recruiting Station Pittsburgh as the Recruiting Support Officer as part of the Individual Mobilization Augmentee program. While serving there, he completed Command and Staff College and in May 2021 transferred to the Individual Ready Reserve.

 

In October 2023 Major Hand received active-duty orders to Blount Island Command and assumed his duties as the Headquarters Company Commander. In April 2025 Major Hand assumed the role as the interim Director of Operations and in August 2025 was promoted to his current rank of Lieutenant Colonel and began his current duties as the Executive Officer.

 

His military decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (gold star in lieu of 2nd award). He is married to Dr. Lauren Hand and has three children.
