Equal Opportunity Coordination

Equal opportunity coordinators play a crucial role in fostering inclusive and respectful work environments within the military. Appointed directly by the commander, they serve as a vital resource for Marines, Sailors and civilians alike. Their primary mission is to prevent toxic leadership and hostile working conditions, ensuring that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

These coordinators work closely with the commander to handle complaints and assess the overall command climate. They integrate principles of equal opportunity into the command's ethos and leadership philosophy, promoting a culture of fairness and inclusivity. By addressing and mitigating prohibited activities and conduct violations, such as bullying, harassment and sexual harassment, they help to create a safer and more supportive environment for all.

Additionally, Equal opportunity coordinators provide essential guidance on how to navigate the complaint process, ensuring that individuals feel empowered to report issues and seek resolution. Their efforts are instrumental in maintaining a positive and professional atmosphere where everyone can thrive.

To file a formal complaint, contact Blount Island Command equal opportunity coordinators Gunnery Sgt. Joshua Brady at joshua.j.brady@usmc.mil (904-696-5048) and Staff Sgt. David Huckabone, david.huckabone@usmc.mil (904-696-5448).

Career Planning

A Marine career planner is a dedicated subject matter expert who plays a pivotal role in advising Marines and commanders on career development, enlisted retention and various opportunities. Their responsibilities encompass several key areas:

Enlisted Retention: Managing the retention of both first-term and subsequent-term Marines, ensuring that talented individuals remain within the Corps.

Career Development: Guiding Marines through their professional journeys, including counseling on promotion boards, tracking career progress and assisting with applications for officer programs. This comprehensive support helps Marines achieve their career goals and advance within the service.

Reenlistment: Efficiently processing reenlistment documents, such as DD Form 4, and completing other necessary forms related to career planning. This ensures that Marines can seamlessly continue their service and pursue new opportunities.

Screening: Conducting thorough screenings for special duty assignments, such as recruiting, drill instructor, and combat instructor roles. This process helps identify the most suitable candidates for these critical positions, ensuring the continued excellence and effectiveness of the Marine Corps.

Their mission is to ensure that Marines are well-prepared and confident as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. These dedicated professionals provide comprehensive guidance and training designed to facilitate a smooth and successful transition.

Through personalized counseling and a range of educational workshops, transition readiness program coordinators equip Marines with the tools and knowledge they need to navigate the civilian job market effectively. They offer expert advice on resume writing, interview techniques, and networking strategies, helping Marines present their skills and experiences in a way that resonates with potential employers.

Additionally, these coordinators connect Marines with valuable resources, including career fairs, job placement services, and educational opportunities such as vocational training and higher education programs. They also provide information on benefits and services available to veterans, ensuring that Marines are aware of the support systems in place to assist them.

By fostering a supportive and encouraging environment, transition readiness program coordinators empower Marines to make informed decisions about their future careers and education. Suicide Prevention & Response

Veterans Crisis LineEveryone will face a challenge at some point; some may develop into a crisis. Look out for red flags following severe depression or a catastrophic life event, such as feeling like a burden, or experiencing hopelessness or helplessness. The sudden loss of a friend or family member is also a risk factor.

Show that you care. Ask questions. Be a good listener. Offer help. Asking about thoughts of suicide does not increase suicide risk—it opens the door to lifesaving conversation. Simple acts of connection can protect those around you.

You are not alone, and help is available 24/7. If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, call 988 (press 1) or visit VeteransCrisisLine.net. For more information, contact Gunnery Sgt. Todd Lawhon, suicide prevention coordinator, at todd.lawhon@usmc.mil or 904-696-3615.
